What is a Hot Air Balloon? How Is It Made?

A hot air balloon is an aircraft that operates on heated air, allowing people to travel through the air. These balloons typically include colorful and large nylon or polyester bags (envelopes) and a basket or cabin suspended under these bags. The basic principle of a hot air balloon is that hot air is lighter than cold air. When the air inside the balloon is heated, the volume of air inside the balloon expands and its density decreases. This makes the balloon lighter than the cold air outside, and the balloon begins to rise.

Taking a detailed look at the technical features, hot air balloons are generally equipped with a heater (burner). This heater, which typically uses propane gas, produces a flame that heats the air inside the balloon. The size of the balloon determines its weight capacity. Small balloons typically carry 2-3 people, while large commercial balloons can carry more than 20 passengers. The ascent and descent of the balloon are controlled by the burner's fire; more heat is required to rise, while the heat is reduced or some of the air at the top of the balloon is released to descend.

Hot air balloon flights usually take place in the early morning or late afternoon when the wind is calmer. These balloons do not move at a fixed speed along a specific route; instead, they have a variable flight path depending on the direction and speed of the wind. Therefore, hot air balloon pilots must carefully monitor wind conditions and weather and be experienced to ensure the safety of the balloon during flight.

How Are Hot Air Balloon Tours Conducted?
